Renovating a home can be complex, as our clients discovered during their whole-home renovation in North Asheville, NC. Perched on a mountaintop with sweeping views of downtown Asheville, the lake, and the Blue Ridge Mountains, the home’s traditional architecture—seen in its trim and mouldings—remained intact while the interiors were fully reimagined.
Partway through construction, the homeowners and their builder, Jade Mountain, engaged Northside to help refine the many remaining details. Building on existing selections, we guided decisions across cabinetry finishes, tile and slab materials, hardware, lighting, paint, plaster, wallcoverings, and furnishings, along with artwork and décor.
The entry introduces a refreshed palette layered over the existing stone floor, leading into a dining room where vibrant drapery and lighting create an early sense of the home’s bold use of color. In the two-story living room, a custom fireplace anchors the main gathering space, designed for both family connection and expansive views. Dark fluted plaster, walnut paneling, and gold-toned metallic finishes are balanced by natural light and softened with warm woods and bright upholstery, creating a space that is both dramatic and inviting.
Throughout the home, existing artwork and furnishings informed the color palette. Each room was developed through layered textures and materials, from the sitting room’s blush tones, cork wallcovering, and gold plaster ceiling to patterned drapery framing mountain views.
In the kitchen, we refined finishes with updated cabinetry, slab selections, hardware, and a deep-toned plaster ceiling accented by gold lighting. A custom banquette introduces a more casual dining area while maintaining continuity with adjacent spaces. These details extend into the pantry, while the craft room and main-level office bring in distinct moments of color and texture through painted cabinetry, artwork, and wallcoverings.
Downstairs, a former guest room was reimagined as a flexible bunk room, complete with a walnut queen bed, built-in bunks with gold-toned details, and a custom closet to accommodate visiting family. In the bathroom, an existing window inspired a layered solution: an oval mirror floats in front, allowing for both natural light and function. A custom vanity, scalloped backsplash, and mosaic limestone floor add depth against moody wallcovering.
The result is a personalized mountain retreat that balances bold color with refined materials. Designed for gathering and everyday living, the home reflects the clients’ willingness to embrace expressive design—transforming a complex renovation into a cohesive, character-driven residence.
